• Friday 4th June --- SHELL SHOCKED

Everyone is utterly stunned by the death of baby Billy. At the hospital, Martin, Gail and Audrey keep a watch over the sleeping Sarah. Gail reaches over and looks sadly at the only reminder that Sarah will have of her son, a photo taken shortly after his birth, with prints of his tiny hands and feet. She immediately bursts into uncontrollable sobbing over Sarah's unconscious form and Audrey sensibly leads her outside the ward so she won't wake Sarah. Outside, Gail sniffles: “Didn't she deserve for things to be okay? I mean, just for once, couldn't things have gone our way, just once?”

Katy is blissfully unaware of recent events and has no idea that the baby has died. She phones Martin's mobile and leaves a voicemail message: “Hi Martin, it's me. I hope you got my message and your birthday wasn't too hideous. GRIEVING TODDThat's it really. You don't have to ring me back if you're tied up and that. Oh, and I hope that everything is okay with Sarah and the baby.”

Todd is completely distraught that he wasn't even able to see his son whilst he was alive. Eileen tries to comfort her grieving son and tells him he could at least ring the hospital and see if he can talk to someone, get them to explain. Todd tells her: “I only wanted to see him.” Jason wanders in from the kitchen with a mouthful of toast and chips in: “You should've demanded to see him mate.” Eileen glares at Jason and tells him to go and make his brother some toast but Todd doesn't want any. Eileen tells Todd: “Look I mean it love, ring the hospital 'cause you're not gonna get anything out of the Platts and it might help you.” Jason surmises: “I suppose one good thing's come out of it. Them lot are out of your life now!” Todd flies at him: “So that's a good thing then is it? That my baby's dead?” Jason tells him he didn't mean that, he just meant that he can start again without having to think about Sarah. Todd rages at him: “Well it's a shame my kid didn't die earlier then, isn't it?”

The registrar calls in to see Sarah and explains: “I know this is hard for you but I'm afraid the birth has to be registered, and then the death as well.” Gail gives her the go ahead to begin filling in the certificates so the registrar asks for the father's name. Neither Gail nor Sarah reply, then suddenly Todd appears and answers: “It's Grimshaw.” Gail hisses: “Who let you in?” GRIMSHAW!Todd continues: “I'm the baby's father. Was ... I 'was' his father.” He looks at the seething Gail and tells her: “That's what she asked Gail.” Sarah confirms that he is the baby's father so the registrar asks Todd to spell out his name for her and she then asks for the baby's surname. Gail hisses: “Platt” before anyone else can reply and Sarah agrees. The registrar then asks if the baby had any first names but Sarah coldly refuses to admit that there was a first name. Todd asserts: “Yeah there was! Sarah, we named him!” Sarah replies flatly: “There was no first name. There was nothing. He was nothing!” Gail flies at Todd and pushes him out of the cubicle, crying: “Come on, out! She doesn't need you. Out! You've no right to be anywhere near her, do you understand? Your part in her life is over. Her baby is dead!” Todd tells her: “I never saw him. I can't picture him in me head and now she's taken away his name! What am I meant to remember? I try and imagine him but there's nothing there.” Gail stops in her tracks, perhaps for a second realising that Todd is feeling the loss just as much as Sarah despite what has happened, but she coldly turns away and says she's got to get back. Sarah tells her mum that she can't do this but the registrar tells her they do prefer a parent to do the registration, so Sarah tells her: “He can do it. It's his fault. Get Todd to do it.” BILLY!So Todd goes off with the registrar to complete the death registration form and signs it. He notices that the registrar has left the first name blank; the registrar tells him it was blank on the birth register and it's best that it's the same for the death. Todd swears that they chose a name weeks back, but she tells him that she's sorry but she has to consider the mother's feelings. As she leaves the room, Todd calls out: “He was Billy. Please!" He rubs his forehead and quietly repeats to himself: “His name was Billy.”

Gail finally decides that Todd has the right to see his son and takes a Polaroid round for him. Todd is surprised to see her and Jason tells him that he will be upstairs if he needs him. Todd asks how Sarah is but Gail says she hasn't come to talk about that. She tells him: “I know that baby was your son and I know his death is affecting you very deeply.” Todd tries to speak but she cuts him off: “No please, just let me speak. I've come to say I don't want to know what you're going through and I'm sorry if that sounds harsh but I've just not got enough room for it in my head. I've only got so much to give right now and all that belongs to Sarah, and believe me it barely feels enough for her. So ...” She hands Todd the photo and continues: “I'm giving you this, and don't think of this as forgiveness, because that's something I'm not able to offer you. It's to ease my conscience so I can concentrate on what's important in all this, seeing my daughter through an unbearable time.” Todd takes the photo and he looks down at his son for the first time with tears in his eyes as she tells him: “Please, stay away from us.” David spots his mum emerging from the Grimshaws' house and he immediately accuses her of being a traitor, then stomps off. Martin tells her to leave him and he'll handle it. Katy sees them and calls out to Martin but he dismisses her curtly.

Katy has decided to build bridges with Martin by getting him a birthday card with ‘Happy Birthday Grandad' on the front. While she sits at the table writing the card, her mum Angela tells her she won't do herself any favours with Martin when he has Sarah's situation to cope with. Katy tells her: “When it's settled down and all back to normal, I do not want him looking back thinking 'Er, where was Katy when I was going through all that?'” Angela points out that she doesn't want him thinking 'Why was Katy hassling me when I was going through all that?' Katy insists: “I am not hassling. It's only a birthday card, a funny one so he doesn't think I'm being heavy.” POOR POOR TODDAngela suggests that Katy should wait until Sarah gets home but Katy explains that she wants Martin to know that she understands that Sarah and her baby are what's important at the moment, and that she's here for him when he's ready. She adds: “I'm not even gonna knock, I'm just gonna put it through the door. I miss him mam.”

Todd sits with Eileen, looking at the photo of Billy. He tells his mum that he couldn't sleep last night because he kept trying to imagine what the baby would look like and all he knew was that he's dead. Eileen says he can forget about that now because he can see him and he's just a normal baby who was just not meant for this world. Todd stares at the photo and rants: “He was gonna make sense of it all, of me! I'd have known what I was, ‘cos of all the other stuff about who I am, gay or straight, or a waste of space, everything people have said about me, that would've come second ‘cos first I'd have been a father and nothing could change that. I thought no-one could take that away from me.”

Sarah gets out of her hospital bed and goes hysterical in the corridor, refusing to stay there any longer. POOR POOR SARAHShe cries: “Why are their babies okay? Why are they still alive? What did I do? You told me he'd be okay. You let me sit with him and hold his little hand. Why didn't you tell me? What did I do? Help me. Why didn't anybody tell me he was gonna die? Why didn't anybody tell me?” Gail hugs Sarah close to her and tries to console her as Audrey looks on helplessly.

Martin gives David a talking to - he tells him they all have to do what's best for Sarah; he will have to put his feelings away somewhere and just try not to think about it. As Martin arrives outside his flat, Katy walks up and hands him his birthday card. He thanks her and opens it but then stares at it in disbelief, saying: “Is this a joke? Is this meant to be funny?” Katy replies, puzzled: “Well, yeah. It's to say I know where your head is at at the moment.” He spits at her: “You knew that Sarah was rushed to hospital right? You didn't think it worth finding out how she is before buying rubbish cards like this?” Katy replies: “Well, she's alright isn't she?” Martin rages at her: “No, she's not alright! The baby's dead. You don't think do you? You just don't think!” Katy tells him: “How was I meant to know?” Martin rages at her: “Er, by asking!?” Katy accuses Martin of avoiding her but he yells at her: “No, I've been looking out for my grieving daughter, my ex wife and my lad. Do you want me to carry you as well? When I'm going out with someone I imagine that while I'm looking out for everyone else, she can be looking out for me.” Katy cries: “I want to. Look that was just a mistake!” Martin snaps: “And so was us even thinking we can go out together.” She tries to stop him from going in but he shrugs her off and throws the card to the floor telling her he doesn't ever want to see her ever again. Katy goes home to tell her mum that Sarah's lost the baby and about how Martin reacted to the card. She whines: “It was meant to cheer him up ... I want to be there for him mam, and he just said us getting back together was a mistake. He thinks I'm even more of a stupid kid now!” She goes into the house to talk to her mum, while her dad Tommy decides to make himself scarce.

Gail gently reminds Sarah that sooner or later they're going to have to start thinking about the funeral, but Sarah doesn't want to talk about that, she would rather talk about organising things for Bethany 's birthday next Wednesday. She tells Gail and Audrey that Bethany wants a Baby Annabelle; they don't seem to think it's a particularly good idea and they can always get her something else. Sarah says Beth can have whatever she wants, with a party and a cake and everything. Meanwhile Todd is telling Eileen how Sarah got him to register Billy's death because she thinks it's his fault that Billy died, and he agrees with her. Eileen is a little more pragmatic and tells him that if it makes Sarah feel better to blame Todd, then that's fine, but in reality it just happened for medical reasons. Todd disagrees: “Things don't just happen mum. They happen for a reason. If I hadn't put her under so much stress ...” Eileen tells Todd that women lose babies every day and they're not all under stress. Todd remains unconvinced; he says he's gutted just the same as Sarah was when she found out what he had done to her and he's convinced that it's what he did that has killed the baby.

Tommy catches Martin as he arrives outside Gail's house and tells him that he's sorry about what happened to the baby. Kevin Webster joins them to offer his sympathies and asks how Sarah is. Martin is not comfortable with the sympathy and tells them that he's just going to get a few clothes and then get back to the hospital. Kevin asks if they know what caused it yet and whether it's got anything to do with what happened with 'the other fellow'. Tommy leaves them to it and Kevin carries on talking to Martin, who tells him: “I just feel so useless Kev. I mean, you're supposed to look out for your kids aren't you? Make sure nothing bad happens to 'em.” KIND KARLKevin tells him that he can't blame himself but Martin rants: “Who else can I blame? I've got all this anger Kev, who else can I take it out on?”

Martin is not impressed to find Karl leaving a bouquet of flowers by Sarah's bedside. Clearly still angry, he snarls at him: “Have you been waiting for me to leave the room?” Karl replies: “No, I just thought ... I just wanted to say how sorry I am.” IT WAS PLACENTA ABRUPTION!Martin snaps: “Oh right, and you think a sorry from you is going to make a difference do you? You're the last person she wants to see.” Karl looks guilty and says he knows, but Martin snarls: “Oh yeah, I know you know or you'd have been here when she was awake so she could have spat in your face!” Karl looks down at Sarah and says that they used to be quite friendly. Martin snipes: “Yeah, and so did we, but not anymore pal.” KICKED KARLJust then, Sarah wakes up, sees Karl and asks him what he's doing there; she tells him he can take his flowers as she doesn't want his sympathy. Martin warns Karl to stay out of his face and swap his shifts if he has to. He shouts: “Cos you see all this here, you caused it!” Karl coolly responds: “Martin, nobody caused it, you know that, you're a nurse. You must have seen the notes.” Karl leaves the room but Martin persues him to continue the argument in the corridor. Karl goes on: “Look at the notes Martin. It was placenta abruption - she had her first haemorrhage before she knew anything about me and Todd. It was just one of those things, nobody's to blame and you know it! You should explain it to Sarah, and to Todd for that matter!” Karl goes to walk away but Martin grabs him and throws him to the ground, yelling: “No! You're the one to blame! You're the one who ripped her and Todd apart! You're the one who ripped her guts out in the process!” He kicks Karl in the stomach and continues yelling: “It was you who went behind her back! It was you who got Katy on your side!” Martin gives Karl one final kick and shouts: “And you were meant to be a mate. You deserved that!” As he looks up from the writhing figure of Karl, his heart sinks when he realises that he's had an audience for the entire performance, and repercussions are probably on their way.
