Sunday 6th June --- REPERCUSSIONS At the Harris's, Katy is still winging on at her parents about what's happened between her and Martin. Tommy makes a snide comment about Martin ‘bailing out' before it was time for him to give Katy her driving lessons and then he offers to take her out for a driving lesson later when he's finished work. He tells her to keep her chin up and leaves. Angela says she thinks she heard Katy get up in the night and Katy tells her she couldn't sleep. Angela is concerned that Katy is going to make herself ill and Katy moans: “I've got to talk to Martin mam. I'm just trying to work out what to say.” Angela tells Katy that she should say nothing but Katy reckons that Martin might think she doesn't care if she doesn't try to make up with him. Katy is determined to let him know that she cares at all costs, and feels he's got no one else to talk to. Angela tries to convince Katy that Martin knows she cares and that he'll soon realise that him knowing about Todd wouldn't have made any difference to anybody; Todd would still be gay, he would still have finished with Sarah and what happened to the baby would still have happened. Katy can't help herself from going round to see Martin again and apologises for the birthday card. Martin tells her this isn't a good time and she tells him she will say sorry as many times as he wants her to. Martin immediately assumes that Katy's come round to catch up on the gossip but she doesn't know what he means. He tells her: “I had a bit of a go at your mate Karl.” She tells him that Karl's not her mate anymore and asks him what he means by ‘a bit of a go'. Martin explains what happened but isn't too proud of himself: “The man that messed up my daughter's life was stood in front of me and I couldn't help myself beating the hell out of him.” Katy tells him she's proud of him but Martin reckons it could cost him his job. Katy wants to help and offers to talk to Karl and ask him not to say anything but Martin gets suspicious and asks: “I thought you two weren't still mates.” He tells her it's none of her business anymore anyway. Gail, Audrey, David and Bethany are on their way to see Sarah in hospital. Martin catches up with them in the street and says he's not going to visit Sarah because he 'thinks' he's working. Later, Gail and Audrey are able to bring Sarah home but she is still frail and emotional and not really in any fit state to be out of hospital yet. She sits on the sofa and mumbles: “I shouldn't have left him ... Billy. I can't pretend that's not his name just ‘cause Todd picked it. How can he have any dignity without a name?” Audrey and Gail listen sympathetically as Sarah continues: “I shouldn't have left him on his own. Not after everything that's happened, it just doesn't seem right, leaving him with all those strangers who don't care, and all the other babies crying.” Gail stoops down and looks Sarah in the eye as she consoles her: “Sweetheart, Billy isn't there anymore.” Sarah cries: “Yeah, but I still shouldn't have left him. Billy's still my baby and I'm still his mum. When we were leaving, I kept listening for him crying. I know it's silly, but he was just so perfect.” Eileen bumps into Maria and Nick in the street and asks how Sarah is. Maria tells her that Sarah is home and she asks after Todd. Nick isn't impressed and when Eileen has walked by, he asks Maria why she spoke to her. Maria insists that it was Todd's baby as well but Nick just snaps: “No, it was Sarah's baby. To him it was just a way of showing the world he's a real man.” Maria sticks up for Todd: “Oh come on, just because he's gay it doesn't mean he's not grieving.” Nick won't accept this and shouts: “Look, if Todd cared about anybody but himself, Sarah would be alright now.” Maria persists: “You don't know that, and anyway, if it was someat to do with Todd, how do you think he's gonna feel?” Nick says he doesn't care and neither should Maria and then walks off leaving her looking agrieved. She goes straight over to the cab office to see Eileen and tells her that the funeral is tomorrow at 1 o'clock at St. Christopher's. Eileen can't believe the Platts weren't going to tell Todd. She says: “Don't they realise he's suffering just as much as they are, more if anything ... like he hasn't been to hell? Maria, he's my son and I can't say anything to comfort him. Them lumping the blame on his shoulders doesn't help – he's doing that to himself.” Maria says she knows that Todd is dead caring, he's always been great with her (he knows what it's like to be an outsider with ‘that lot'). Martin is facing up to the fact that his attack on Karl is going to have serious consequences. Katy finds him in the hospital later and tells him she's been to see Karl and he's not going to make a complaint against him. Martin can't believe it and reminds Katy that he told her not to say anything, but she tells him that Karl wants to forget all about it. He says he's going home because he's been suspended. Katy is confused because Karl promised her but Martin explains that apparently half the hospital saw what happened and it was recorded on the security video anyway. Katy asks him if he explained what Karl did but Martin points out that senior nurses can't go round beating up the staff. Exasperated, Katy offers to tell his superiors the whole story but Martin bites back: “Oh, so right now you wanna tell everyone do you? Only not so long back you couldn't even tell me.” |
