Sunday 1st August --- MOTHERLY LOVE
Eileen is sorting out a load of stuff from the sideboard for Emily Bishop's jumble sale. She spends some time reminiscing over some cards, photos and memorabilia that she has saved from Todd's childhood, much to Jason's annoyance. Todd is sitting at the table fixing a model aeroplane and Eileen shows him a card that he made for her when he was at primary school which reads: “I love you mummy, love Todd.” Todd looks up and says: “I didn't know you kept that!” She says she's got them all, she keeps everything. Then she finds a photo of Todd when he was a baby sitting in a high chair and she offers to show it to Jason but he's not interested. Jason asks: “You got any pictures of me there?” but Eileen is too busy looking at Todd's stuff and replies insensitively: “er, I don't think so.” Jason mutters: “Thought not.” Then Eileen tells Todd that he was a lovely baby and immediately apologises for talking about babies, but Todd says it's alright. He shows Jason the model aeroplane and Jason says: “It stinks!”
A bit later on, Todd grabs some money off the sideboard and heads out: “Right, I'm off.” Eileen tells Jason that she thinks Todd seems to be getting over losing Billy and asks Jason what he thinks, but he's fed up with Eileen's obsession with Todd and is in no mood for discussing it. Eileen complains: “Well you could take an interest.” He says she seems to be doing enough for the both of them so she asks him what he means. He moans: “I mean, it's always Todd this, Todd that. Let's not tread on Todd's feelings, never mind about mine.” When she asks him what he's talking about, he continues: “I'm talking about me! I'm talking about the fact that you've kept loads of stuff about Todd, all his cards and his drawings and stuff, but there's nothing about me is there? No pictures of me as a baby, no birthday cards or anything. Where's the pictures of me eh mum? Or did you just decide the minute I was born I wasn't even worth a roll of film?” With that, Eileen slams her coffee mug down on the table and says: “Right!” She goes upstairs and returns with a shoebox full of Jason's childhood memories to cheer him up. She talks him through some of the sentimental items in the box, including his birth stone that his gran gave her when Jason was born, a card with his baby footprint on, his weight card and his first tooth. She tells him she keeps the box under the bed because she wants things close to her that she couldn't live without in the event of a fire. Jason is instantly cheered up and can't believe she's kept all this stuff. Eileen tells him: “You're my first born Jason. You'll always be extra special to me, sshh! I love you.” She kisses him on the forehead and Jason is totally happy again.
Martin and Katy have got back together at last. After everything that's happened, Sarah is angry with Martin and feels totally betrayed by both of them. Gail tells Martin that he's going to have to work very hard to talk her round. Gail finds Sarah sitting at the top of the slide in the back garden contemplating recent events. Sarah moans: “I can't believe he's going back out with her when he knows how I feel. He must love her more than he loves me.” Gail tries to console her: “Martin loves you very much. I'm not sticking up for him. He loves you a great deal. Even if he were your real dad, I can honestly say that Martin loves you a great deal more than Brian ever would have done. Martin chose to adopt you and Nick. Martin wanted to be your dad more than anything.” Sarah asks: “Then why is he hurting me like this mum? I hate it here, I feel trapped ... and I'm supposed to just accept that and be happy for him, but I can't be happy for him mum, not when I feel like this. I won't be friends with her, when she's just laughing at me. I might as well just sit out in the middle of the street and let them all laugh at me.” She slides down the slide and cries hysterically: “Well they should be laughing at me, I mean Stupid Sarah, who doesn't even know that her boyfriends's gay, or Stupid Sarah whose dad doesn't even care less about her. Stupid Sarah whose baby died!” then she runs in the house.
Martin turns up at the Platt house later on and Sarah and David give him a hard time. Sarah snipes at him: “She's really got you where she wants you hasn't she. First she gets you to take her back and then she gets you to take her on holiday ... I can't believe it, after what she did?” Martin tries to defend Katy: “She did nothing.” Sarah agrees: “Exactly! She did nothing and she could've done something, she could've told me that my fiance was sleeping with a man ... D'you know, I thought at least you'd be on my side, but you really don't care about my feelings do you? I mean nothing to you!” Martin is horrified that she could even say or think such a thing and he bites back: “Hey, we'll have less of that talk. How dare you say I don't care about your feelings?” Sarah's had enough and fumes: “I hate you, I never wanna see you again!” then runs in the house again. David tells his dad: “She's proper mad at you. I think you've really blown it this time!” then he slams the door in Martin's face.
