Sunday 16th May --- HEARTBROKEN

Sarah and Todd are having a quiet morning in the flat together. Todd is sitting in the armchair looking glum; he is busy battling with his emotions and struggling to come to terms with losing Karl. DOWN IN THE DUMPSSarah mentions that once the baby is born they won't get any time to themselves so they might as well make the most of it now. Todd mutters: “So everyone keeps telling us.” Sarah notices that Todd seems to be down in the dumps so she asks him if he's alright. Todd immediately answers yes but then turns his head to look at her pregnant belly and changes his mind. She asks what's the matter and Todd replies: “I just ... feel ... overwhelmed.” Sarah tries to make him feel better by asking him to feel the baby moving inside her. Todd is reluctant and says he doesn't want to, so Sarah says: “You won't hurt him.” She insists and places Todd's hand on the side of her belly, saying: “Feel that? That's our baby Billy.” Todd flinches and pulls his hand away so Sarah asks him what's the matter. He mutters: “I can't ... I can't believe we ...” Sarah asks if she's done something to upset him and Todd tells her she's done nothing wrong. He tells her he's confused and tries to cover up by saying that they nearly lost Billy. Sarah assures him that everything's fine with the baby and in a couple of months he will be here with them. I JUST FEEL OVERWHELMEDThen the enormity of everything that is happening to Todd hits home and he can't hold back the tears, but Sarah thinks it's joy and doesn't realise the true reason why. She hoists herself onto Todd's lap for a cuddle, but he is completely unresponsive.

Karl is sitting in the hospital cafeteria, also looking glum. When Katy joins him, he says: “I suppose you wanna hear all the gory details? He's finished with me.” Katy is shocked: “What? Todd's finished with yer? You mean - he ended it?” Karl quips: “I couldn't compete with the gym slip mother.” Katy replies: “Yeah well, if she is having his baby.” When Karl implies that Sarah is to blame for trapping Todd, Katy says: “She didn't blackmail him into staying with her. This isn't her fault.” Karl snaps: “Oh, it's mine?” Katy thinks that Todd is more guilty than anyone because, after all, Karl wasn't in another relationship. Karl replies: “Spare me your kind thoughts. Katy, from now on, just keep your mouth shut about it ... He's made his choice. In case you still can't understand that -” Katy interrupts: “Oh yeah, I do understand. I won't tell Sarah. Why should I? I don't wanna hurt her.” They agree that neither of them would want to upset Sarah. Karl says he won't be getting involved in Sarah's 'little safe world' any more, and he walks off.

Sarah is walking round with Bethany looking for Todd, as she has no idea where he's got to. She's already tried Eileen's but apparently she says she's not seen him all day. It turns out that Todd is in fact over at his mum's and he has asked her to lie to Sarah about him being there. He tells Eileen that he's been trapped in the flat with Sarah all weekend and he's scared of saying something. When Eileen reminds Todd that he's marrying Sarah, he asks: “Do you think I should tell her what's been going on?” Eileen replies: “Why, has something happened? Have you been seeing Karl?” Todd denies it straight away and Eileen asks him what's wrong: “What's up love? Are you still feeling confused?” Todd tells his mum that he's staying with Sarah and he loves her, but he just feels so guilty. Eileen tells him: “You're bound to, but I don't want you beating yourself up because I've seen what you've been going through.” Todd says he can't help it and he feels terrible, but Eileen tries to make him see sense: “What? Terrible for wanting to stick by your fiancee? You should be proud of yourself.” Todd asks her if she's proud of him and, despite her misgivings, she replies: “I just want you to be happy, whoever you're with, and if Sarah's the one that makes you happy, well, then that's fine by me.” Todd confirms that he loves Beth and he loves Sarah. Eileen adds: “So what are you worried about?”

Katy catches up with Todd as he's walking back over to the flat from his mum's house. She says: “On your own? And you and Karl are finished.” Todd looks surprised and asks Katy how she knows so she tells him she's just seen Karl and he told her. TODD, U R GAY!Todd confirms that the whole thing is over and he wants to make sure that she's not going to say anything to Sarah. Katy replies: “No, I'm not that stupid, or that cruel.” Todd thanks her and says he's really grateful. He tries to convince her: “You know, our marriage is gonna work, we're gonna make it happen ... it's just, if she -” Katy interrupts: “Not if she knows what you really are?” Katy accuses Todd of pretending to be Sarah's boyfriend because the baby's on the way and that once he's born Todd will feel trapped. Todd challenges her: “Hang on, my son won't trap me!” Katy hisses: “Todd, you are gay! It doesn't matter how many babies you have.” Todd points out that he finished with Karl, not the other way round, but Katy doesn't think that proves anything and she still thinks he will have other affairs with men. Todd tells Katy that he's not interested in that any more but Katy presses him: “Admit it Todd. In a few months, you'll get bored and frustrated. Sarah has got nothing you want, and two little kids won't keep you in that flat. Why should they? They won't, you'll walk.” Todd says that's not going to happen but Katy finishes: “It's what you are and there is nothing you can do about it.” She walks off leaving Todd looking confused again.
