••• Friday 26th March --- GROWING CLOSER

Todd is about to go out for a drink with Karl again but Sarah asks him not to go and they start arguing about it. Todd asks what's the big deal about him going for a drink after work, to which Sarah replies: “Cos what's the point in earning more money if you're just gonna spend it all on booze?” Todd snaps back at her: “One lousy drink? It's hardly gonna break the bank,” but Sarah points out that it will if you do it as often as he does. Todd refuses to change his mind now because it's all arranged, so Sarah suggests that she should come with him and she can get her mum to babysit. Todd doesn't like the sound of this idea: “You can't do that ... ‘cos I'll look like a right dork wouldn't I, my girlfriend turning up, it'd look like you were checking up on me or someat.” Then he puts his foot down: “Look, I work dead hard all week - all I want is a bit of time out, okay?” and he leaves the flat to meet up with his best mate Karl.

While Todd and Karl are out drinking, Karl's boyfriend Robbie turns up and has a jealous fit, thinking that Karl is ‘seeing' Todd behind his back. JEALOUS ROBBIEKarl tries to calm him down: “I don't know what you're getting so het up about. This is the bloke I was telling you about. You know, the one who's getting married soon, got one kid already and another on the way?” Todd chips in: “It's true, we're just having a drink after work. In fact I should be getting back to Sarah.” Todd stands up to leave but Karl tells him not to be daft and to finish his drink, then he turns to Robbie and placates him: “Eh, why would I want anyone else when I've got the body beautiful at home - works out twice a day don't you Robbie?” NERVOUS TODDBy now, Robbie has calmed down and he apologises for getting hold of the wrong end of the stick, then he leaves them to it. This has understandably made Todd feel pretty nervous so Karl apologises and tells him that Robbie's just a bit possessive like Sarah. Todd says: “You seemed to handle it alright anyways.” Karl replies: “That's the trick, knowing how to handle them.” Todd pauses for a while and fishes: “You didn't really tell him I was after you, did you?” Karl denies it and points out that it's all in Robbie's head. Todd asks if he has mentioned him to Robbie and Karl admits that he has: “Yeah, why? Shouldn't I?” Todd admits that he's not really mentioned Karl to Sarah and Karl wants to know why not, so Todd makes up some excuse about wanting to keep work and home separate. Then Todd says he should be getting back to Sarah but he looks reluctant to leave so Karl asks: “So what's stopping you?” Todd replies: “I'd be walking out on my round again wouldn't I?” He has persuaded himself to stay and buys Karl another drink.

They end up staying out very late that night and both get pretty drunk, then Karl walks Todd home. They arrive in Coronation Street and stumble about in the road, enjoying a laugh and a joke together, and almost getting run over into the bargain. Karl supports Todd by putting a friendly arm round him. ALMOST!As they arrive outside the flat, Todd drops his keys on the pavement and stoops to pick them up, then he turns to find the door, saying: “Now, I just gotta find the door. I'm sure it was there when I left this morning!” They both fall about laughing and rest their heads on each other's shoulders for support. Then they stop laughing, look at eachother, and pause for a while facing each other. This is the “moment” when they almost kiss. It's so obvious that they really like eachother and they both want to make the move but Todd can't quite bring himself to do it, so he moves away and says goodnight. Karl is clearly disappointed but he realises this isn't the right time and he respects Todd's decision. He smiles, nods and backs off, saying: “Night Todd,” then he walks away. Todd can hardly believe what's just happened and he doesn't know what to do. He watches as Karl walks off, looks up at the window of the flat above, and then looks back in Karl's direction again. Then he sighs, leans against the door and lets himself into the flat.
