Friday 14th May --- DECISION TIME

Todd is under even more pressure as the wedding plans step up a gear. Sarah's grandmother Audrey Roberts goes round to the flat to talk to Sarah about the wedding and persuades them to consider having a few of the trimmings, even though they only want a registry office bash. They witter on about Sarah's dress, the bridesmaids, even a maid of honour, the whole works. Audrey offers to help pay for all the extras and she tells Sarah that she should have a bit of glamour because it's her big day. Todd just stands there gawping, looking totally helpless - now the wedding is getting far too close for comfort and events have begun to gather pace out of his control. Sarah is totally excited and she goes over to Todd, puts her arms round him and asks him what he thinks. Audrey beams: “You agree with me, don't you Todd? You want everything to be perfect, don't you? Course you do.” Todd snaps himself back to reality and just about manages to enthuse: “Yeah, yeah course.” PROBLEM?Then he goes outside to phone Karl on his mobile and has to leave a message: “It's me. I've gotta talk to you. Look, I'm coming round after me shift, but just phone me, let me know where you are, 'cos -” Audrey suddenly creeps up on him and tapps him on the shoulder, saying: “Problem?” Todd turns round to find Audrey breathing down his neck and he immediately cuts off the call. He makes out that it was just a friend on the phone but Audrey hadn't even noticed - she's too pre-occupied and excited about the wedding. She apologises to Todd for going on about the wedding and she says she doesn't want to make trouble between him and Sarah, but it's supposed to be the best day in a bride's life. Todd tells her it's not a problem and she goes off happy, leaving him breathing a sigh of relief at yet another close shave.

In the cafe, Candice is in raptures because Sarah has just asked her to be a bridesmaid and she wants to know what she has to do. Katy laughs: “Well, that's simple - you just have to sleep with the best man. That shouldn't be too difficult!” Candice says it depends on who it is and she asks Sarah who Todd's having as best man but Sarah tells them that they haven't decided yet. At this moment, Todd walks in; Katy leaps from her seat and drags him over to their table, saying: Dead on cue Todd! Come on, just the bloke who can answer all our questions. Candice asks Todd who he's having as his best man and Katy lays on the pressure, pointing out that if Sarah is having bridesmaids, he's got to have a best man. Katy asks loudly: Got anybody in mind? Some 'special' mate? Todd is put on the spot and doesn't know what to say. Candice thinks it might be Jason, so Katy picks up on this and says: No, I'm sure Todd can think of someone better than that. It doesn't have to be your brother, Todd. I can't see Jason making a funny speech, can you? Not one to use up a lot of words in one go is he ... Oh, I've got it! What about ... Karl! Yeah, he'd add something a bit different to the whole event, wouldn't he Todd? Todd is completely lost for words and Katy is obviously reveling in his squirming discomfort. She goes on: I suppose you'd better ask him first - he might say no. Do you think he's the sort to say no, Todd?” Todd can't believe what he's hearing and has no idea what to say.

Sarah mentions the idea again later on in the flat. She tells Todd that Katy is popping round in a minute because he said he was going to go and ask Karl about being best man. Todd replies: I didn't say I was gonna ask him ... I might. I'll think about it when I see him. Sarah won't drop the subject and suggests that Todd should just pop round and buy Karl a drink; he won't want to stay at the flat because her and Katy have got girly things to sort out. Exasperated, Todd asks Sarah why she's suddenly best friends with Katy because not so long ago she couldn't stand the sight of her. I HARDLY KNOW KARL!Sarah says that Katy didn't run off with Martin just to spite her and it wasn't as if she'd planned it after all. Todd picks up on this understanding attitude; he approaches Sarah and asks hesitantly: “Is that what you think? Like ... what if say ... you know ... well if ... suppose that ... but he can't bring himself to finish what he's saying. Sarah asks him what he means but he just sits back down and says: “Nothing, forget it.” Sarah asks him what the matter is and thinks he must be worried about the wedding, but she reassures him that he's not the only one. She says: I mean, I can't wear white. What are you and Karl gonna wear? Todd snaps: Will you stop going on about Karl. I've not even asked him yet; I mean, it's ridiculous; I hardly know him, not really. Todd points out that he's got other friends and, anyway, Karl might say no. Sarah replies: Only one way to find out - ask him! Todd agrees and gets up to leave, saying that's what he's going to do. Sarah delays him: “Todd, don't get upset about all this. Just remember ... it's about our love. That's what's important.” Todd nods slightly and forces a smile, while Sarah beams happily.

Todd has realised the time has finally come to make his choice between Sarah and Karl, and it seems he has chosen Sarah. He reluctantly heads round to Karl's flat to tell him. Karl is surprised to see him and says he's been watching a film but came straight back when he got Todd's message on his mobile. Todd goes to ask him who he was watching the film with but thinks better of it and Karl says: “Hang on. You think I was on a date?” Todd replies: “It doesn't matter anyway.” Karl asks Todd what he means and what's going on but Todd doesn't say anything. Karl asks: “Katy been having another go at you?” Todd tells Karl: “I just think she's right ... about all this. Gotta get it sorted out sooner or later.” Karl waits for him to continue but Todd is finding it hard to say what he needs to say. Karl says sarcastically: “Excuse me if I seem selfish but when you've done all this sorting out, where does that leave yours truly? Or should I just wait for Katy to break the news to me?” Todd remains silent so Karl prompts him: “This is the elbow is it?” Todd blurts out: “You don't really feel anything for me.” Karl rails: “Oh, that's cleared that up then! Nice to be told what I feel – I don't care for you, I don't ... You're right. Karl's not someone who has any deep feelings. You're right. He's not gonna put on a posh frock and walk down the aisle to celebrate his love for you. Spot on pal! Not unless it's a real designer number.” Todd tells him this is no laughing matter but Karl adds: “Look at me Todd. Am I laughing?” Todd is even more confused about what's going on now. He tentatively asks: “What are you saying, Karl?” Karl calms down and says softly: “I'm not saying I love you, I just don't wanna lose you Todd. Why? I dunno! You're hardly a bundle of laughs are you? But I ... I don't believe I'm saying this, but ... I think we've got a future.” Todd is gobsmacked; all he can do is shake his head in disbelief and all he can say is: “What?” Todd doesn't believe what he's hearing; deep down he doesn't want to finish with Karl but he knows that the wheels are in motion for the wedding and there is nothing he can do to stop it. DON'T KEEP HER IN THE DARK!Karl squares up to Todd and keeps up the momentum: “Leave her. Stay with me. We'll find a place, we'll make it work.” Todd replies: “Woh, I don't get it Karl. You tried to finish with me the other day.” Karl dismisses it: “Come on, it's not only women that can change their mind. I want you. I wanna be with you.” Their faces are almost touching now and it seems that Todd might give in to Karl, but the mood is suddenly broken when Todd's mobile goes off. Karl says: “Are you gonna answer it?” Todd looks at his phone and tells Karl that it's Sarah. Karl sits on the edge of the bed and says: “Tell her. Don't keep her in the dark.” Todd sits down on the arm of the sofa and briefly speaks to Sarah on the phone. She asks him if he managed to track down Karl to ask him about being his best man. He tells her he didn't ask him because he didn't think it was right. Sarah asks Todd to come home because she wants to show him some photos of the wedding dress and she's dying for a back rub. After the call, Karl asks him what Sarah wanted and Todd admits: “She wanted to know if I'd asked you about being best man at the wedding.” Karl erupts: “What? Are you mad? There is no wedding, there can't be. You're gay! There's nothing you can do to change that. You might want to, but you can't. You are gay. It's fine. It's not a crime. It's what you are! And that's why there's only one way you can go and it's towards me, or if I'm not what you want, then someone like me.” Todd gets up, faces Karl and tells him: “Karl, it IS you! It would be you if ...” Karl snaps: “If? If what? There is no if.” Todd moans: “You don't understand. I love her. I don't wanna hurt – I can't bear to hurt her. I just ... and then there's the baby, our baby, my baby! I wanna be a good father to my child!” Karl rants: “Todd! Get real! How can you be a good father when you're living a lie?” DUMPEDTodd tells him he's going and heads for the door but Karl calls to him: “Look at me! Just look at me. Now, that feeling ... just tell me one thing. When you look at her ... do you feel the same?” Todd shakes his head almost imperceptibly and cries: “It doesn't have to be everything. It can't be. I won't let it be. She loves me. And then there's my baby, I -” Karl interrupts him: “But what about me? What about ... what about if I were to say I loved you?” Todd replies: “I'm sorry Karl. I'm so sorry,” and he turns to leave. Karl shouts: “You go out that door, don't think there's any way back!” Todd pauses at the door and looks back, saying “Goodbye Karl” emphatically, trying to convince himself more than anything else, and he walks out. Karl is left looking mortified.
