Monday 31st May --- CRISIS POINT

Following the previous evening's argument, Katy flees to her parent's house much to the obvious delight of her dad Tommy. He is really pleased to have Katy home and doesn't mind showing it as he stumbles over himself to get her some breakfast. Katy is in less of a jolly mood than her dad, with the prospect of losing Martin forever. Tommy is unable to contain his glee and he tells Katy she is well out of living with Martin but he's not prepared for her reaction as she snaps: “Who says I want to be?” Tommy huffs: “You said he treated you like a kid!” Katy replies: “Only 'cos I was acting like one. He was worried about Sarah. She 'is' his daughter after all.” She tells them that she wants to be on her own, have a bath and watch some telly, so her parents go off to work.

Sarah is insistent that she wants to go back to work today but Gail tells her that she doesn't have to go and she doesn't know who might come in the cafe. Sarah replies: “I don't care who comes in. None of this is my fault. What would you do in my shoes?” Gail says smugly: “I'd listen to my mother.” Sarah tells her: “No you wouldn't. You'd want to be out there showing the world that no matter what life throws at you, no matter how many times you get knocked down, that you'll keep getting back up, and that's exactly what I'm going to do!” GAYS, FAIRIES, POOFTERS!Sarah is determined not to hide herself away and has made up her mind that she will go into Roy's Rolls today.

Todd and Jason are in the cafe trying to get some breakfast but Vera refuses to serve them. Jason is all for leaving quietly but Todd insists that they want two breakfasts. Vera snipes: “The management reserves the right not to serve fairies ... gays, fairies, poofters, they're all the same to me. What you did to poor Sarah was unforgivable!” Roy tries to stick up for Todd and says they haven't come in to cause any sort of trouble or embarressment. At that moment, Sarah walks in and tells Roy she thought he could do with an extra pair of hands. When Todd sees her, he tries to talk to her but she does her best to ignore him. Jason tells him he's going and Roy finally tells Todd that he thinks it would be best if he left. So Todd finally gives in, apologises and follows his brother out of the cafe.

Meanwhile, Martin goes round to see ex-wife Gail and he tells her about Katy's involvement in the whole Todd/Karl affair. Gail reacts angrily and Martin defends Katy at first but then he admits that they've had a massive row; he says that Katy has walked out back to her family and he confides in Gail that as far as he's concerned, his relationship with Katy is over. Gail tells Martin he was wrong before when he tried to make out that Katy was so mature. Meanwhile, Katy calls round to Martin's flat in a bid to build bridges but finds that he's not there.

Back in the cafe, Sarah is getting on with her work, clearing tables when suddenly she gives out a gut-wrenching scream and doubles up in agony, her tray crashing to the floor. SARAH IN AGONY :(Roy and Vera rush to her aid and get her to a chair. Roy says he thinks it's the baby and they need to get her to a hospital straight away. He tells Vera to ring for a Streetcar taxi and he asks Sarah what she thinks is happening. It's obviously something to do with the baby. Roy asks her when it's due and she says not for another nine weeks. As the Streetcars line is engaged, Vera rushes over to the cab office to get a taxi and bumps into Eileen who immediately starts panicking and decides to take it upon herself to make sure Sarah gets to hospital. Eileen and Patrick help Sarah into the back of the taxi, still crying out in agony and shouting: “I want me mum!” When Eileen tries to get in the back of the taxi with Sarah, onlooker Blanche Hunt, objects, saying she hardly thinks that Sarah will want her with her seeing as what that son of hers has done, and Vera points out that it was her Todd that's caused all this mess in the first place. But Eileen ignores them and gets in the back of the cab to accompany Sarah to the hospital.

When Sarah arrives at the hospital, the nurse examines her and makes her as comfortable as possible. Eileen is there at the bedside when Gail arrives and asks what's happening. This time, Sarah has an APH (internal bleeding from the placenta), which is what she had a couple of weeks ago, but it's considerably more severe this time. THIS IS ALL TODD'S FAULT!The nurse tells Eileen and Gail that an obstetrician will be here to see Sarah very soon and she asks them to wait outside. Out in the corridor, Eileen explains to Gail what happened in the cafe when Sarah suddenly got this terrible pain. Gail grudgingly thanks her for coming to the hospital in the taxi with Sarah and Eileen says she was just glad she could be there for Sarah because the baby is her grandson as well as Gail's after all. Eileen thinks that, as the baby is at risk, Todd should be here too but Gail goes mad and she adamantly points out that Sarah doesn't want him anywhere near her or the baby. She shouts at Eileen: “Hasn't he done enough to her already? No, for the last time, no. She wouldn't be suffering like this if it wasn't for him. This is all Todd's fault!” Eileen ignores Gail's tirade and decides she's going to phone Todd anyway.

Todd turns up in the corner shop and starts bleating to Sunita about how badly everyone's treating him. He says: “Most people round here think I'm some kind of monster, half of them tell that to me face, the other half just blank me, so I expect they're saying it behind my back. Me own brother's ashamed to be seen out with me, in case people think he's the same as me.” Sunita realises this is why he's been so moody over the past few weeks. Todd tells her: “It was horrible, trying to work out what I had to do. Thanks for being so understanding, you're the only one who is.” Sunita stops him though and tells him that she can't help feeling sorry for Sarah in this, and that goes for every woman who's been dumped. Todd tries to explain that he couldn't go on pretending to be something he isn't. Sunita carries on sticking up for Sarah, and Todd softens his tone: “It's true, I've hurt her so much. I didn't want to, I never wanted to.” HOPE UR PLEASED WITH YERSELF!When Sunita mentions the baby that Sarah's going to have to bring up by herself, Todd says he will keep trying until Sarah will listen to him because he wants to be part of Billy's life just as much as Sarah does. He says: “You know, Billy's mine too and always will be, and I'll always be his dad.”

Eileen catches up with Karl and decides that she wants to have a harsh word with him. He recognises her and seems pleased to see her. Eileen says: “I hope you're pleased with yourself, you've done your best to help him ruin his life. At his age he didn't know what he wanted but you're old enough to know better. Oh yeah, well he told me about how you urged him to be honest with himself.” Karl doesn't know what she's talking about and asks her what has happened. Eileen fills him in: “You know damn well, he's done what you told him, he's come out hasn't he and now he's paying for it.” Karl is rather surprised and says he didn't know anything about Todd coming out. Eileen cries: “He's in turmoil. Sarah's left him, she won't talk to him, she won't let him anywhere near her, and she said he can have nothing to do with the baby when it's born, and he doesn't know what to do with himself, he's that upset.” HE'S IN TURMOIL!Karl says he's sorry about that and he can understand what he's going through, but Eileen doesn't think he can because on top of everything, Sarah might lose the baby. Karl wants to know why she's blaming him and Eileen points out that if Todd hadn't met Karl, none of this would have happened. Karl bites back: “It would've happened some time with somebody else. Todd isn't gay because he met me, he's always been gay. When you've finished blaming me, just remember this: you wanted nothing more than to see Todd and Sarah break up – well, it seems like you got your wish.” Eileen is left speechless and Karl walks off.

Todd and Jason arrive home with some fish and chips and Todd says: “Did you see the look that woman in the chippy gave me?” Jason tells him: “Give it a rest will you Todd. Don't keep winging on.” Todd's phone rings and it's Eileen to tell him that Sarah has collapsed at work and has been rushed into hospital. TODD IS GOBSMACKEDIt's obviously very serious and Todd rushes out of the house.

Katy tries Martin's flat again later and finally finds him in. After much winging and apologising and going round in circles, Martin finally decides to forgive Katy and they end up making love to celebrate their reconciliation. KATY HAVING A WINGEKaty switches Martin's phone off so they won't be disturbed.

Meanwhile, Todd arrives at the hospital looking for Sarah. Gail tells the nurse that Todd is not wanted here because her daughter has made it perfectly clear she doesn't want him anywhere near her or the baby. Todd tries to placate Gail, saying that he still cares about Sarah and it's still his baby that she's having. Gail snipes that if he'd cared about Sarah, he wouldn't have treated her the way he has, then tells him to get out. At that moment, the obstetrician walks up and tells them that there is a problem – Sarah is haemorraging and is in quite severe pain. Todd wants to know about the baby and the woman tells them that the baby can't get all the oxygen he needs and this is very serious; both Sarah and the baby are at risk and they need to do an emergency caeserean section.

Gail and Todd both follow Sarah as she is wheeled into the surgery room. Todd asks Gail what's going to happen and wants to know that his little boy isn't going to die. SARAH IN PAIN :(Gail goes mad at him and she fumes: “What about my little girl hey? What about her? You could have killed them both.” Todd begs her not to say that but Gail is really distressed and tells him to just get out of here. Audrey turns up and tries to calm Gail down but Gail carries on shrieking at Todd and tries to physically remove him from the premises. Audrey points out: “It's not all his fault!” Gail slumps down in a chair, exhausted from the skirmish, and asks: “So whose is it then? Is it ours, for loving men, who turn out to be so cruel?” GET OUT OF HERE!Then Audrey tells Todd he'd better go and when he refuses, Audrey promises to come and tell him if anything happens. When Audrey starts begging, Todd decides to keep out of their way for a while.

Later, Nick and David come rushing over to Martin's to tell him that Sarah's been rushed into hospital. Obviously having been interrupted in the throes of passion, Martin does his shirt up as he answers the door and invites them in sourly. They burst in through the door and say they've been trying to get hold of Martin but his phone's been switched off. Martin is annoyed with Katy for switching his phone off; he doesn't want her to go to the hospital with him and tells her to just go home. Martin, Nick and David arrive at the hospital and Martin asks Gail if anyone has updated her yet. She says no and Martin reassures her that Sarah and the baby are both in good hands. TEA & SYMPATHYAudrey says she will go and get some cups of tea because she could do with stretching her legs.

Todd is sitting in the canteen and Karl comes up to him to ask how Sarah is. Todd looks very upset and says he's going mad because they won't tell him anything, they won't let him near her and the only one talking to him is Sarah's gran. He appeals to Karl: “Her mam thinks I set out to kill Sarah and my little boy. I didn't. Why would I? All this, it's ... it's not my fault is it?” Karl is looking very sympathetic and says of course it isn't his fault but Todd goes on: “Well, everyone else thinks it is, all because I told Sarah I'm gay. I just wanted to be honest, I thought that way we might still be a family, in some way ...” Karl can't believe that Todd's still talking like this and tells him he's crazy for imagining things like that. BIG HUG!!!He says: “After you told her, why didn't you come to me?” Todd says he just wanted his family and he asks tearfully: “They're not gonna die are they Karl? Please don't tell me -” Karl reaches forward and hugs Todd, who hangs onto Karl's arm, puts his head on Karl's shoulder and hugs him back. Just at this moment, Audrey walks into the canteen and reacts angrily when she sees Todd hugging this nurse. She sarcastically remarks on what a touching little scene it is and that it's nice to see that in a time of crisis, Todd has a shoulder to cry on. She says she was quite worried about him before but she should have known better. She asks Karl if Todd got him with the ‘old suffering number' with his ‘big brown eyes' and tells him not to fall for it. Karl gets up and says he should go but Todd says: “Karl, please don't go.” Audrey then realises who he is and mocks: “Oh, this is Karl is it? You're not running out on pretty boy are you Karl? Oh, what a shame Todd. Somebody is not falling for your tears at last hey?” MAD BATKarl walks out, saying he's only making things worse. Audrey then flips and gives the assembled onlookers an oratory on how Todd's been out chasing men while his fiancee and her baby are fighting for their lives. Todd tries to reason with her but she tells him to leave them all alone and he walks out defeated. Audrey goes back to the others without the teas and Martin asks what's going on. She tells him about Todd weeping on Karl's shoulder in the canteen and says she thinks Todd has no right for comfort when there's none for the rest of them.

Eileen manages to get off her shift early and joins Todd at the hospital. He tells her that they won't tell him anything - he could be a father or the baby could be dead for all he knows, they won't let him anywhere near him. COULD BE A FATHEREileen says he shouldn't be surprised by this and she tries to persuade him to go home and get some sleep but he insists that he wants to be as near to the baby as he can be and is staying there until he knows that they are both okay. He tells her she would be here if it was her son, to which she points out that she ‘is' here for her son, and they will just have to stay there and wait together.

The Platts are desperately worried and anxiously awaiting news about Sarah and the baby. The obstetrician finally tells them what's going on: Sarah is just coming round from the anaesthetic and is just about to go into the High Dependency Unit; she's stable and should be fine but they need to keep an eye on her. Gail asks about the baby and the obstetrician tells them that he's in an incubator and has been rushed into intensive care; he's had a really stressful entry and is considerably premature. She points out that the next 24 hours will be critical for him.
