Friday 30th April --- SECRET AFFAIR

As Todd gets ready to go off to work, he asks Sarah what she's going to do all day. She asks him what she's supposed to do stuck on her own in the flat while he's at work. He laughs: “Watch the telly ... it's educational. You start off with a group of weirdos fighting on a talk show, and then you learn how to make £4.60 by spotting a lost Picasso in a car boot sale!” He tells her that he really has to take these extra shifts at the hospital now that she's not earning. As he leans down to kiss her goodbye, Sarah notices that he's wearing one of his best shirts to work and she asks him why. Todd blusters: “Oh, should I ... should I put someat else on? THREE CHOICESShe replies: “Nah, you might as well get some wear out of it. It's not as if we go out much anyway.” Todd kisses Sarah goodbye and leaves for work.

Todd has lied to Sarah about his ‘extra shift' and in fact goes to see Karl. He has another self doubting session as he moans: “You know, I'm not sure I can do this ... Lying to Sarah and ... deceiving her.” Karl points out that there's no reason why she should suspect anything but Todd's not so sure. Karl tells him: “Todd, people live with secrets all the time. The longer you do, the easier it'll be ... If you wanna put a stop to this right now, all you have to do is put down that beer and walk out the door. Your life will be just what it was before - simple!" Todd sighs: “A lie.” Karl continues: “Oh yeah, a big fat one, but that's the situation isn't it? ... three choices: give me up, be Mr Straight; give Sarah up, come out; or see if you can go on ... like you are now.” NURSE CALLING ME!Todd is surprised and asks: “Would you still go on seeing me if I stay with Sarah?” Karl chucks a cushion at him and jokes: “As long as we don't have to have this conversation every time!”

Sarah goes to the hairdressing salon to chat with Candice and Maria. Maria suggests going out for a pizza that evening; Sarah thinks it's a great idea and decides to phone Todd to ask him. On the phone, Todd tells her: “You're lucky to have caught me ... I'm a bit tied up darling ... Tonight? Sure ... I've gotta go, there's a nurse calling me!” Sarah tells Todd she loves him and he replies diplomatically: “Yeah, me too. Bye.” Karl smiles at Todd and says: “You seemed to handle it okay ... I suppose me and her are in competition?” Todd replies: “No, it doesn't feel at all like that. I know where I really wanna be.” Karl asks him: “You can handle it then?” and Todd replies: “Well, I didn't know if I could, not 'til then when Sarah rang ... but yeah ... yeah I can.”

That evening, Todd and Sarah, Maria and Nick, and Candice (minus her new boyfriend Tim) are sitting in the pizza parlour deciding what to order. KNOWING STAREThere is much debate between Todd and Sarah as to whether they can afford starters and pizza. Todd rudely brushes off the waiter, telling Sarah he doesn't like to be pressurised. When Nick tells him he's had long enough to make up his mind, Todd gets tense and complains to Sarah that Nick is always getting at him but Sarah says he's imagining things. All of a sudden, Katy turns up accompanied by Karl, much to Todd's embarressment. Todd and Karl exchange knowing glances and Todd wants the ground to swallow him up. They spend the evening smiling and staring at each other across the table. Todd squirms when they talk about extra shifts to cover baby expenses. Sarah says: “As long as you don't overdo it.” ENJOYED EVERY SECOND!Karl tells her: “Don't worry Sarah, I'll make sure he doesn't collapse on the job!” and winks at Todd. This is too much for Todd and he gets up to go to the gents.

Karl meets him on the stairs outside the gents and Todd says: “What did you follow me for?” Karl replies: “You'd have been disappointed if I hadn't!” Then Karl tells him to chill out and have fun but Todd complains that he thinks this is too risky and he wants to know why Karl had to come here. Karl tells him: “Katy asked me ... and I couldn't resist seeing you.” Karl gets him to admit that he's enjoyed every second of tonight but Todd still thinks it's wrong to do it under Sarah's nose. Karl tells him: “That's the thrill of having an affair - the greater the risk, the greater the buzz.” Sarah joins them on the stairs and Karl lies that they were talking about work. Sarah tells Todd that she's ordered a pudding for them to share and tells him not to eat it before she gets back from the loo. She asks Karl to watch him and Karl says: “You can rely on it.”
